College football week 8

There are certain things in sports that make them fun to watch.  Great plays, upsets, games that come down to the last seconds, watching you favorite team win or even watching a team you can’t stand lose.  With those guidelines being put out their week 8 of the college football season was fun.

I was able to watch teams from each of the main conferences today and the thing I realized about this year is that it really will come down to the last week of the season before we know who is going to win each conference and I like that.  The Big 10 is still up in the air, although Michigan St does hold their own destiny I don’t think they go undefeated the rest of the season.  The SEC is all mixed up with the Alabama loss. The SEC championship game should be great. The Big-12 still has a lot of huge games that will be played in the next couple of weeks before any team can really take a lead. The Pac-10 is probably the most likely to be set out of all the conferences but Oregon still has some games that could trip them up.

Doing the weekly awards for the NFL has been fun so I’m trying some new ones to go with College Football.

Impressive performance award: Darron Thomas -I strongly feel that UCLA is a not as good as people were thinking but still they are a team with good athletes and Thomas just destroyed them.  He was good in my mind before the game but after the game he is one of the most dangerous QB’s in college football.

Over rated team award: Texas – Is it just me or has no one else noticed that Texas is ranked simply because they were good last season.  They lost to UCLA who is not a top 5 team in the Pac-10, and they lost to Iowa State who had never beat Texas EVER before.  If Texas loses to Baylor, and I think they will, they could lose their next 3 games and end the season 6-6. I almost gave this award to Notre Dame but I think Navy deserves the credit for the win more then Notre Dame for losing. Oh and Notre Dame may not even get Bowl eligible if they lose to Tulsa or Army.

Under rated team award: Baylor: It’s like no one even notices this team is out there but they are 3-1 in conference and take on the previously mentioned Texas next week.  If they win that game they will have the chance to end the season with at least 8 wins and possibly more if they can upset Oklahoma St or Oklahoma.

Game of the Week: Wisconsin vs Iowa: Despite another example of poor clock management by a head coach in college football this game was still great to watch. Two very good teams went all out for 4 quarters and the game came down to the final seconds.  If you missed it and it gets replayed on ESPNU you should check it out.

I know its still early but here are some BCS game match up I would love to see.

Oregon vs Auburn: This game could end up being the highest scoring BCS game in history.  If Boise State doesn’t get into the championship game this would be the one matchup that would make me really want to watch.

Boise State vs Oklahoma: A rematch of my favorite BCS game of all time. Oklahoma would want revenge and Boise State would come out wanting to prove that they can win with out gimmicks.

TCU vs Alabama: This would be a match up of two teams with very strong defenses but the offenses are bad either.

Too much good stuff

So today I’m watching some college football and I am just overloading with how much fun I’m having watching three good games.  UCLA vs Texas, Arkansas vs Alabama, and Stanford vs Notre Dame were all playing on three consecutive channels at the same time.  Let me start with the UCLA game.  UCLA isn’t the prettiest, they aren’t the most exciting but they took it the 7th ranked Texas.  Now Texas is very overrated but UCLA still looked good.  Hopefully this game will help people to realize that the PAC-10 isn’t as soft as everyone says.

To help the argument about the PAC-10’s strength is Stanford.  Ramming it down the throat of the Irish is exactly what the PAC-10 doctor ordered.  Oregon is going to be good this year but my gosh Stanford will have a lot to say about who represents the PAC in the BCS this year.

The final game I’m watching this morning is Alabama vs Arkansas and all I have to say is, this game lived up to every bit of the hype it was given.  Both teams were fast, they hit hard, and I have no arguments that the SEC is a great conference.

The best part of all of this is I still have the Oregon State vs Boise State game tonight to enjoy.  No doubt I’m going to need some potato wedges, BBQ chicken, and a few other snacks to truly enjoy the rest of today.

Football season

Last night I sat down on the couch and turned on the TV to enjoy a night of sports and in less then half an hour I was on sports overload. It was amazing.   On ESPN there was the USC vs Hawaii football game, Fox had the Seahawks game, the NFL network had another preseason NFL game, FSNW had the M’s game, and the MLB channel had another baseball game.  There was so much going on I didn’t know what to watch half the time.  So now that football season is starting here are a few things I’m excited about and some things I’m watching for this season.

1. The Pac-10 title.  With USC officially dethroned the Pac-10 is up for grabs and this is the first year in a while where their isn’t a clear cut favorite.  I know Oregon is a favorite but they have question marks just like everyone else in the league.  Oregon has quarterback issues.  OSU has the same issues, although both have great running backs. Washington has a lot of hype but they haven’t had a winning season for a while. UCLA could be a threat but they haven’t been consistent the past couple of years.  You never know what your going to get from Stanford, Cal, Arizona and Arizona state.  The only thing I’m sure of in the Pac-10 this year is that USC and WSU wont win the conference.

2. Boise State playing for a national title?  If its ever going to happen this is the year.  I am rooting for it all the way.

3. Getting the chance to watch Brett Favre in his final season …..maybe…..is kind of exciting to me.  Too bad the Vikings aren’t going to do as well this year as they did last year.  I have no clue who will be in the Superbowl this year but there are some teams I’m watching.  My two underdog teams I’m watching this year are the Falcons and the Texans.

4. Only three months and counting until the Washington State High School football championships in Tacoma.  My dad and brother en-laws have gone to 4 of the last 6 years I believe.  Nothing is better then watching the 8 man football game when a scrawny little freshman lights up some big guy.  So far I’ve seen players like Jake Locker (UW QB), Kellen Moore (Boise State QB), Taylor Mays (49ers Safety), and a few others play in the championships so its always fun.

5. The last things I’m looking forward to….Thanksgiving and Christmas.  Partially for the football games but mainly for the food.
